Ember Education makes Lantern, a Report Writer that drafts comments in each teacher’s own voice, checks them against the school’s reporting rules, and keeps every student record onshore.
01 · Why Lantern exists
Report season shouldn’t cost teachers their weekends.
Twice a year, every teacher writes a careful, individual comment for every student they teach, dozens of them, each one matching the school’s reporting policy, watching character limits, and staying honest and personal. It is some of the most important writing a teacher does, and almost all of it happens after hours, under real time pressure and mental load.
We started Ember Education because the tools meant to help with this asked teachers to trade away two things they should never have to: their own voice, and their students’ privacy. Generic AI writers produce comments that sound like nobody, and most of them quietly ship student data offshore to do it.
Lantern is our answer. It learns how each teacher writes, drafts in that voice, and checks every comment against the school’s actual rules before the teacher ever sees it, flagging anything that needs professional judgement rather than silently rewriting it. The teacher stays the author and the approver. Lantern just removes the grind.
02 · Our mission
Give teachers their voice, and their evenings, back.
Our mission is to take the most repetitive part of reporting off teachers’ plates without taking away what makes a report theirs. Every comment should sound like the person who wrote the previous one, meet the school’s standards on the first pass, and leave the teacher firmly in control as author and approver.
- Teachers stay the author. Lantern drafts, checks and flags. It never signs off. Every comment is reviewed and approved by the teacher whose class it describes. The judgement, and the responsibility, stay where they belong.
- Onshore by default, not by upgrade. Australian data residency isn't a premium tier or a promise for later. Every school's data lives in AWS Sydney with disaster recovery in Melbourne, and the AI runs on Australian-region infrastructure, from the first day of the trial.
- Never training on your students. Student notes and report comments are never used to train AI models, and prompts are not retained. That's a contractual commitment, not a setting buried in a policy.
- Built for the load, not the demo. Reports get written in stolen minutes between classes, not in one heroic weekend. We design for the corridor, the dictated note and the class set of thirty, because that's where the time actually goes.
