Acceptable Use Policy

This Acceptable Use Policy governs how schools, staff and other authorised users may use Lantern, the Report Writer provided by Ember Education ([PLACEHOLDER: registered legal entity, e.g. Ember Education Pty Ltd], ABN [PLACEHOLDER: 11-digit ABN]). It applies in addition to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. By using Lantern you agree to use it only as described below.

Permitted use

Lantern is a professional tool for drafting and checking genuine student report comments. It is licensed to schools and made available to their authorised teaching and administrative staff for the following purposes:

• Drafting report comments for students the user is responsible for, in the user’s own voice, as part of their school’s normal reporting process.
• Checking draft comments against the school’s configured reporting rules, style guidance and tone expectations.
• Refining, shortening, lengthening or rephrasing the user’s own draft comments while the teacher remains the author and approver.
• Administering the school’s account — managing staff access, configuring reporting rules, and reviewing the audit trail — where the user holds an appropriate administrative role.

Only authorised staff with their own credentials may use Lantern. There are no student accounts, and Lantern is not intended for use by students.

Teacher responsibility to review every draft

Lantern assists with writing; it does not replace the teacher’s professional judgement. The teacher remains the author and approver of every comment. You must read, review and, where necessary, correct every AI-assisted draft for accuracy, fairness, tone and appropriateness before it is saved, exported, shared with colleagues, or sent to a student or their family.

You are responsible for the final content of any report comment produced with Lantern’s help, just as you would be for a comment written entirely by hand. AI-assisted output should never be published or relied upon without that human review and approval.

No fabrication of facts about a student

You must not rely on Lantern to invent, infer or embellish facts about a student. Lantern works from the observations, evidence and achievement information that you provide. It must not be used to generate specific claims — about behaviour, results, attendance, incidents or progress — that you cannot independently substantiate from your own records and professional knowledge of the student.

Like any AI system, Lantern can produce text that sounds confident but is inaccurate. Treat every generated statement as a suggestion to be verified against the facts, not as a record of what occurred.

Prohibited use

You must not, and must not permit anyone else to:

• Enter personal information about any person except as a necessary part of writing a legitimate report comment for a student you are responsible for. Lantern is not a place to store unrelated personal data about students, families, colleagues or third parties.
• Enter sensitive information beyond what is reasonably required for reporting, or input content that is unlawful, defamatory, discriminatory, harassing or otherwise inappropriate.
• Use any output without the teacher review and approval described above, or present AI-assisted drafts as finished, verified reports without that review.
• Attempt to extract, reconstruct or reverse-engineer training data, model weights, prompts, or the personal information of other schools or users from Lantern’s responses.
• Use Lantern’s outputs to fabricate facts about a student, as set out above.
• Share, sell or transfer your login credentials, or allow anyone else to use your account. Access is personal to each authorised user.
• Scrape, crawl, harvest or bulk-extract content from Lantern, or access it through any automated means not expressly authorised by us.
• Circumvent, disable or interfere with rate limits, security controls, authentication, audit logging, or any technical measures that protect Lantern and its data.
• Probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the service, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, system or network.
• Use Lantern to develop, train or benchmark a competing product or model, or otherwise use it in a way that breaches our Terms of Service or applicable law.

Consequences of breach

If we reasonably believe this policy has been breached, we may take action proportionate to the breach. Depending on the circumstances, this may include issuing a warning, suspending or restricting the relevant user’s access, suspending or terminating the school’s account, and removing offending content.

We may act immediately and without prior notice where a breach poses a risk to the security or integrity of the service, to other users, or to the personal information of students or staff. Where we are required to do so, we may report unlawful conduct to the relevant authorities. Suspension or termination for breach does not entitle you to a refund, and does not limit any other rights or remedies available to us under the Terms of Service or at law.
